Week 5 Post #1 MBA 6101 "Artificial Intelligence May Eliminate Some Jobs"
An executive at OpenAI discussed how AI could possibly eliminate some jobs but also create others. He described the "grunt work" being delegated to AI and freeing up others to do other important things such as product design, distributions and operations and sales and marketing. While some may feel threatened by job elimination, this model would really help employees be more productive and reclaim lost time. In an interview, COO Lightcap was asked, "If someone could do the work of 5 people, do they really need 10 people?" His response was that volume is really what you want. If the productive capacity is utilized to its full potential, then you run more efficiently as a company. Although our first reaction is to worry when we hear job elimination, I do believe that perhaps we look at it more with open minds. This could mean a job promotion for some as they move forward to another learning opportunity in their career. This could eliminate their job too, but this just opens the door to another path.
If companies are noticing that redundant work that is being done could be better off in the hands of AI to promote productivity and volume whatever the case may be, then I think the company needs to do what's in their best interest. It would be a big pill to swallow being told that I am being replaced by a robot essentially, but I would have to put myself in their shoes. If I owned a company that I knew could benefit from having some sort of AI take over a few areas to improve volume and production, then I would have to make that change happen. Restructure and a smooth streamline process of actions to help my employees understand that they are needed but just not in a job that is not needed and perhaps this other area of need would be better for them. Not eliminate them, help them grow which is what a good leader should want.
