Week 6 Post #2 MBA 6101 Does AI Dream of Electric Sheep?
Does AI dream like we do? What happens to them when they power down? Do they just remain powerless or do they continue to process everything around them and data stores until they are up and running again? This Wall Street Journal article explains how our minds work and those of AI. Maxim Bazhenov, a sleep researcher at the University of California, San Diego medical school shares how the human brain learns continuously and stores data into existing knowledge. Same for AI neural networks because like humans, we work better with sleep and rest.
AI droids process millions of data everyday but this is a problem as Bazhenov states. Neural networks are performing at a superhuman pace but fail in one area and that is remembering. Once it powers down, it essentially overwrites the learned data from the day causing "catastrophic forgetting." This makes it hard to lean on such technology as "human" when it cannot function the same way when it comes to the brain. Our brain functions the opposite when it comes to learned experience. It only enhances when we sleep for memory consolidation. My worry is if we don't power down these devices of AI will they eventually burn out as a human would or would they go rogue and attack the planet at once?
